Comment on To Reorient, or Not to Reorient…That is a Key Question in Dementia Care by Jay Speyerer

Coleen--

Your article really brings home the fact that logical responses are not the best way to go.

Years ago in art school, our photography class was invited to photojournalistically cover a convalescent center populated mostly by seniors. In the day room, I politely asked a pleasant-looking lady seated on a sofa to move closer to the person beside her for a better shot. Her response was to continue to look pleasantly at me, and smile and nod. And not move. That was my first experience of looking into someone's eyes and seeing that nobody was home. I was young and it rocked me a little.

Weeks later, we were hanging the show of photographs in that same day room when a lady walked over and picked up one of the hammers and proceeded to walk away with it. An attendant gently took it back and she said, "Okay, but give it back when you're done. It's my dad's." This lady was 70 and Dad was long past swinging a hammer. But the gentle approach worked.

Guess the right thing to do is go with your gut and not your brain.

Well done.

My father was the one in our family who was caregiver to our mother throughout her slow decline and eventual death. It was hard on all of us, but on him most of all as she came to not know him as her husband. I've never witnessed such dedication, commitment and love as my father gave to my mother, especially in her final weeks. Last week we commemorated 1 year since her death. Rather than dwell on how much of her we lost in the last few years, we remembered who she was before Alzheimers claimed her mind. It is such a devastating illness and my heart goes out to anyone who is caregiving to a dementia patient. Try to remember who the person was before they were robbed of their most basic mental abilities and, as you said, remember it is not their fault.

I did not know you had a blog here, but I am so thrilled you do. I have read though quite a lot, but can't stop. You must create a book out of these. They are so rich in love and quality--they must be published. I will be posting again as soon as I read the next 10. Love you!
